Job Search Muscles Sore My Muscles Are Sore
Job Search Muscles Sore My Muscles Are Sore⦠Snow on my car after much of it had melted away Yesterday we woke up to about a foot of snow. I knew wed be shovelling snow, but I didnt realize HOW MUCH! I went out with two of my kids and we did our driveway and a neighbors driveway, and I felt good about the work we did. I was glad to have my kids there, especially as we did service for our neighbors. I was kind of sore the rest of the day. And then, OH MY GOSH, this morning I am absolutely SORE! Im sore in places I havent been sore in for I-dont-remember-when! This morning as I was limping and hobbling around, I thought about my pathetic muscles and then thought about the hundreds of thousands of job seekers who seem to be limping and hobbling around. In pain. With anguish. I wondered, as my muscles screamed at me, if these job seekers have exhausted their JOB SEARCH MUSCLES. Maybe their form is bad (like me, shovelling snow, bent over too low and stressing my lower back muscles). Maybe they do useless stuff (like when we threw snow into the wind, and it came right back onto the driveway). Maybe they do the wrong thing for too much time (like when my kids where shoveling down a path that wasnt not part of the plan fun for them but ultimately useless as they took resources away from the overall task). Maybe they use the wrong tools (like when I had to use a kids snow shovel my heavens about 1/4 the width of the shovel I really wanted!). Theres a reason the job search muscles get sore: You may be doing the wrong stuff, as I mention above. You may have muscles that need some work, but its just natural to go through that pain, initially. If your muscles are sore for the first reason, figure out how to fix that (do different stuff?). If your muscles are sore for the second reason, drink a job search protein shake and just keep working your muscles will get stronger, it will be less painful, and youll be more effective and have better endurance. If you are just getting started in your job search, realize you may have to go through a painful period, but it wont always be painful just jump in, get started and treat yourself right so you can heal and grow throughout the process. The fallout is that they get better results and make more money in the short run, but if they are people of good conscience, they will start to drink, eat more, act out and at the end of their life fail as a person. Thats how branding creates stability. The way to build a brand is to know what your strengths are, why theyre special, and what you like doing with them. And if youre unsure of how to build your own brand, here are three steps to follow: 1. Know what youre very good at. This isnt about what you like to do. We all like to do a lot of things, but that doesnt mean we stand out for them. You also dont need to get paid for what you love to do most. After all, you may love food, but you probably dont get paid to eat, right? So pick something you love but that makes sense to get paid for, which means it should pay enough to support you and whoever depends on you. Also, pick something in an area youve done work in that people have told you is exceptional. Each of us can only be fantastic at a few things. One of the big tricks to career success is to find what you do better than almost everyone else, and then let people know that thats what you do. For most people, the search for what makes them special takes years and years, and includes a few wrong turns. 2. Know what people think of you. This is hard to do. For example, most people think theyre more well-liked than they are. And most people think theyre more essential to a team than they are. A great way to get an assessment of how people think of you is to ask yourself if you have the five traits of a likable person. Another approach is to think about traits that likable people have and work on those, because the traits you consciously focus on are ones you can generally improve. Branding blogger Adam Salamon writes that there are some things you should always want to convey, for example that youre interested in other people and that you have a positive attitude. These are things everyone should think about. But being likable is only part of brand building. You need to be not just liked, but known for what youre good at. Do people know what youre good at, or do they just know that youre nice? You want both. 3. Meet the right people. Not every brand is relevant to every person. Understand the kind of people wholl connect best with you, and surround yourself with them, at least to get started. That way you can focus on presenting the parts of you that are most relevant to your brand. This shouldnt seem extreme. The younger the workforce gets, the more mainstream the idea of personal branding becomes. You need a community like that. Because in the new workplace, no one can take care of you but you not your boss, not your company, not the economy. Being prepared with the right kinds of questions for your informational interview will help both of you feel that your time has been well spent.
